Nantucket Cranberry Bliss!

One of the many events that make fall so special on Nantucket is the cranberry harvest and this year was no exception. The Nantucket Cranberry Festival, sponsored by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, is held each year on the Saturday of Columbus Day Weekend at the Milestone cranberry bogs in Sconset. The vivid red berries are a sight to behold as they are being harvested. Families come to enjoy lunch or snacks, learn a little something about the history of cranberry harvesting and listen to local music. Always a favorite are sheep sheering and herding, hayrides, pumpkin weighing and the petting zoo.

In October 2011, clearly a month loved by Nantucketers, our residents covered the island using any device that could capture video. The call to action offered anyone on Nantucket to become a filmmaker for a day-certainly enticing for would-be movie makers and anyone who loves Nantucket. From Brant Point to Great Point and many places in between, Nantucket 24 filmmakers shot film in their favorite spots, their secret spots and talked about the many things that make Nantucket special.

The result was a chronicle of the people, places and soul of Nantucket… described by Nantucket Films as “700 filmmakers. 24 hours. One inspiring community.” Thousands of hours of raw footage were submitted to Nantucket Films and edited to create a “movie mosaic” of our beautiful island . The movie premiered on island in late August but just in case you missed it, you can get your copy on island at The Hub, Bookworks, and Mitchell’s Bookstore. Now that summer on Nantucket is over and fall is upon us, it is the perfect time to revisit Nantucket, captured on film by so many of the local characters! Nantucket Race Week – Opera House Cup Regatta Race This Week

NANTUCKET RACE WEEK: August 11-19 2012

Nantucket Race Week is held annually in August and is highlighted by 8 days of regattas, awards ceremonies, and festivities. Hosted by Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club , this week of events benefits Nantucket Community Sailing. This is the primary fund-raising event of the year for the Nantucket Community Sailing program, which offers Nantucket’s families and visitors lessons and access to a variety of vessels, including sailboats, windsurfing equipment, kayaks, and paddleboards.

2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the Opera House Cup Regatta, the first all-wooden, single-hulled classic boat regatta on the East Coast. This event attracts some of the finest sailboats in the country. As a the centerpiece of Nantucket Race Week, the Opera House Cup Race also offers wonderful opportunities to watch the race. You can sign up to sail on the tall ship LYNX as she engages in a mock battle with the tall ship Pride of Baltimore II. After leaving the Nantucket Harbor, the LYNX will then become a spectator boat for the Opera House Cup Race.

Don’t miss The Nantucket’s Rainbow Fleet parade around Brant Point that begins at 9:30 on Sunday and kicks off the Opera House Cup Race. This is a colorful favorite for all spectators.
